Review of Declaration of Plants under the NRM Act

A review of the invasive plants declared under the Natural Resources Management Act 2004 is currently being conducted by the Alinytjara Wilurara NRM Board in co-operation with Biosecurity SA, the other seven NRM boards around the state and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources. The review aims to upgrade our knowledge of currently declared plants, ensure that the declaration of plant species is not too burdensome on landowners, and that the management of weeds is based on science and emerging weed threats to agriculture, public safety and the environment are acknowledged.

The last declared plants review was conducted in 1991. Since that time there have been
significant changes in factors including land use, weed control technologies and the level of
risk posed by some weeds. The revised plant policies aim to reflect these changes.
Therefore, there are proposed changes to how some weeds are managed in the
Alinytjara Wilurara region which may be reflected in the declaration of these plants
under the Act.

The first batch of 47 revised weed policies can be viewed on the Natural Resources South Australia website at http://www.nrm.sa.gov.au/GetInvolved/PlantDeclarationReview.aspx. The public consultation period for this batch has now closed.
