2010-11 Caring For Our Country Program

Biodiversity and Natural Icons

  • 50,000 ha of native habitat and vegetation managed to reduce critical threats to biodiversity and enhance the condition, connectivity and resilience of habitats and landscapes;
  • Project 10 - Stemming the buffel grass threat for the southern 2/3rds of the region (Southern 6 regional areas) covering over 50,000 hectares
  • Project 6 - Regeneration and revegetation 10sq.km (1000 hectares) of regeneration and revegetation in suitable habitat for key species in the Yellabinna-Yumbarra landscape (need change to the Yalata landscape)
  • Project 1 - Fire management in the AW NRM region.  Regional fire plan Southern 6 landscapes completed. 100 hectares burnt using traditional burning practices in the GVD landscape
  • Project 4 - Management of threatened flora in AW NRM
  • Project 5 - Climate Change strategy for the AW NRM Region
  • Project 15- Nullarbor habitats mapped, link to climate change and draft recommendations on works to protect developed
  • Project 14 - Draft Surface waters - GVD, Yellabina - Yumbarra and Nullarbor Plain landscapes & Project 2 contributes
  • Project 16  - Develop and Implement Fauna Threatened Species Program 2010 11
  • Project 4a - Management of threats to coast & marine specific flora and fauna
  • Project 8 - Monitoring the Health of the Alinytjara Wilurara Region 2010-11

    Establishment of 20 scientific monitoring sites and 10 community monitoring sites across the region.

  • Project 8 Monitoring the Health of the Alinytjara Wilurara Region 2010-11

    Establishment of 20 scientific monitoring sites and 10 community monitoring sites across the region.

  • Project 11 - 3 EPBC species management and recovery programs implemented over 50 hectares including reducing the impact of pest animals inc. Rabbits ;

    Decrease the impact of feral animals on EPBC listed threatened flora/fauna species in 3 sites nominated by the Land Condition and Vegetation Officer/Threatened Species Officer and Coast & Marine Officer to a low risk to regeneration level as per Cooke  assessment 2009 for rabbit management

  • Project 12  - Reduced impact and spread of Weeds of National Significance (WoNS), including (note only Athel pine is in APY lands but we will be keeping it out of the MT and Yalata area so is still relevant) containment lines over 2,000 ha for Athel pine ,Bridal Creeper; and other WONS in neighbouring regions

  • Project 13 1 coastal community groups engaged in natural resource management activities

  • Project 18 - 10 volunteers with increased knowledge in sustainable habitat management and biodiversity assessments in Yalata Lands, Great Victoria Desert, Yellabinna and Yumbarra

Sustainable Farm Practices

  • Project 7 - Not really linked to sustainable practises but the revegetation is the same outcome. (As there is access to APY in year 2 would see that in year 2-3 will be able to meet milestones)

    3 /Indigenous land managers improving land and soil management practices over 500 ha to reduce erosion

  • Project 2 - AW PROJECT Indigenous Participation 10_11

2009 - 2010 Caring for country NRM Schools Program

The School Programs throughout the Alinytjara Wilurara region were first established through the Community, Skills, Knowledge and Engagement Service Profile in 2009. From communities’ aspirations, the Schools Program was developed to support 4 schools in the region (over 40 students) to implement programs to transfer traditional knowledge from Traditional Owners to the students. As part of this investment, Natural Resources Alinytjara Wilurara has a focus on strengthening community capacity and to bring together traditional ecological knowledge and scientific knowledge to manage the regions natural resources effectively. Education and knowledge sharing through the Schools Program have been a major component to delivering this outcome.
